I recently had the privilege of sitting down with one of the greatest American soccer players of all time, Landon Donovan, for a conversation that went far beyond the game of soccer.

While we certainly talked about the FIFA World Cup, playing against Lionel Messi—who Landon didn’t hesitate to call the greatest of all time (GOAT)—and his experiences representing the United States on the world’s biggest stage, what stood out most were the lessons that apply just as much to business and life as they do to sports.

Competitive Spirit Is a Superpower

One theme kept surfacing throughout our conversation: competitive people find a way.

Whether you’re building a company, leading a sales organization, coaching young athletes, or competing for a World Cup, talent alone isn’t enough. The people who consistently win have an internal drive that pushes them to improve every day.

Competition isn’t about beating someone else—it’s about refusing to become comfortable.

Adversity Is Inevitable

Every successful career includes setbacks.

Landon shared stories about overcoming obstacles, handling pressure on the world’s biggest stage, and staying mentally focused when expectations couldn’t have been higher.

His message was simple:

Resilience isn’t avoiding adversity. It’s responding to it.

The greatest performers don’t panic when things go wrong. They adjust, stay composed, and keep moving forward.

That’s true in sports.

It’s equally true in business.

Mental Toughness Wins Championships

One of my favorite parts of the discussion centered on the mental side of performance.

Physical talent can get you into the game.

Mental focus determines how long you stay there.

Whether it’s recovering from failure, blocking out outside noise, or performing when millions are watching, the best competitors learn how to control what they can control.

World Cup Stories Only a Legend Can Tell

Of course, we couldn’t talk with Landon Donovan without diving into soccer.

He shared incredible stories from his World Cup experiences, what it’s like competing against the very best players in history, including Lionel Messi, and even offered his perspective on England’s semifinal loss to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Donovan discussed how he believed England’s manager struggled under the pressure of the moment while Argentina continued to demonstrate the composure and championship mentality that has defined their recent success.

Hearing those insights from someone who has lived those moments was fascinating.

Great Lessons Transcend Sports

The biggest takeaway from our conversation?

The principles that create elite athletes are remarkably similar to the principles that create elite leaders.

  • Embrace competition.

  • Stay resilient through adversity.

  • Develop relentless mental focus.

  • Never stop improving.

Whether you’re chasing a World Cup, growing a business, leading a sales team, or simply trying to become a better version of yourself, those lessons never go out of style.

A huge thank you to Landon Donovan for sharing his experiences and wisdom. It was an incredible conversation, and I hope you’ll enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed being part of it!
